Product Certification Icon Guide

What do each of the core product certifications mean, and where are they from?

Biobased Content Certification

Spartan biobased content certification that indicates the portion of each product made from renewable plant and animal resources. Biobased formulations typically rely on ingredients like soy, coconut, corn, citrus (d‑limonene), sunflower, and palm kernel oils, as well as other plant-based acids like citric acid. Biobased products reduce fossil fuel use, reduce foreign oil use, reduce dependency on foreign energy and are generally better for the environment to produce and use.

Green Seal Certified

The Green Seal certification is an independent 3rd party certification that represents compliance with a rigorous set of criteria designed for companies to achieve leadership levels in sustainability. Green Seal certification requires an ongoing commitment to health and the environment through annual compliance monitoring and improvement.

Design for the Environment (DfE) Certification

The Design for the Environment (DfE) Certification through the EPA helps buyers easily identify products that meet the health and safety standards of the pesticide registration process required by the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) as well as other rigorous criteria required by the EPA. DfE-certified products exclude ingredients that might pose long-term health risks as well as  considerations that reduce the environmental impact of products.

USDA Certified Biobased

According to biopreferred.gov, “biobased product” means a product determined by the Secretary to be a commercial or industrial product (other than food or feed) that is- (A) composed, in whole or in significant part, of biological products. Biobased Products are derived from raw materials and provide consumers with an alternative to conventional petroleum-derived products.

The BioPreferred Program is transforming the marketplace for biobased products through two initiatives: mandatory purchasing requirements for Federal Agencies and Federal contractors, and voluntary product certification and labeling.
